Awkwardness can only be felt in the present moment, and it is often exactly that feeling from which we are constantly rushing away. Rushing towards an imagined future.
An inward look will identify awkwardness to be an opportunity to sit to identify that gift that it really is; to observe the awkwardness, to deeply feel it, to let it settle, and then find peace and refuge in the present. Wouldn't that be a lovely preparation for the moment of death?
