What Nature Teaches

Nature teaches us simplicity and contentment, because in its presence we realize we need very little to be happy.

Magazine: The Space Between

In the current issue of Tricycle, we share an interview with New York's poet laureate Marie Howe and a selection of her poems. Howe speaks to Zen teachers Robert Chodo Campbell and Koshin Paley Ellison about the death of her brother, living through unendurable loss, and how "quiet attention" is the most important thing we can give to each other, as well as all the inscrutable spaces in between. "Poetry can hold the unsayable," Howe tells us. "All the complexity of human life." Read Howe's poems and interview.

Tricycle Poetry Night with NY State Poet Laureate Marie Howe

Tricycle presents "An Evening with New York Poet Laureate Marie Howe," an intimate poetry reading filmed in New York City in mid-May. Howe's poems frequently deal with loss: "The way my mother looked when she was dying," reads Howe. "The sound she made—her mouth wrenched to the right and cupped open...No, not the sound—it was her body's hunger/ finally evident.—what our mother had hidden all her life." Watch the reading.
